Ready, Set, Sing Classes to begin October 4th, 2022

Well; here we go again! We've settled in our new practice venue at Arts Altoona, 6th Avenue and 22nd Street. The folks here have been awfully nice and supportive of our practice sessions. "What a great venue! The acoustics are tremendous.

We are in the process of putting together our 2023 show. This is a time of exploring for the chorus. We need to pick songs the chorus likes to sing and audiences like to hear. Do we lean a little more to the "Doo Wop" style or more to the traditional barbershop style? Our aim is to stay with songs the audience can relate to. There are so many songs from the 50;s and 60's that are being arranged to the four part harmony that we sing. The times are "a changin" and you may not see much of your grandfather's barbershop, but you will see a more recent repertoire.

We are always looking for more singers. Folks who love to sing. Friendly folks who enjoy meeting in a relaxed atmosphere and lending their voices to this wonderful world of Four-Part Vocal Harmony. If you are (or know ) a potential singer; we  will be offering a "Ready, Set, Sing" class to get you started on this wonderful hobby. Classes begin on October 4th and continue for 4 Tuesdays. We start promptly at 7:00 PM with classes and then we'll switch to our regular practices. You're welcome to stay on after classes and either just listen or join in. We'd love to have you.

My oh my! What a wonderful year this has been for the Altoona Horseshoe Chorus. Getting back together for the first time last summer was truly a test of resilience for the Chorus. Could we ever get back together? Would the guys come back? Will there be a learning curve to get back on track? Well we did it and we did it with pizazz. The guys came back and we remembered the songs. Next step was to do some performances and put together a show. We were able to land a couple of gigs locally. Legion Park, Alexandria Hartslog Huntingdon Pride Telethon. Hey! Guess what? We still have it. Let's do a show. We'll call it "A Cappella Showcase" and invite other A Cappella groups to join us. The Altoona High Choral Ensemble does a great job. And, yes, Flight 93 Memorial Chorus to  get us back into a patriotic spirit. And to top it of, Gold Medal finalists Senior Quartet "Party of Five". We got out the advertising, public service announcements and poster. They came, in large numbers to see and hear the Horseshoe Chorus.

Now looking forward; we have gigs at Blair Creators Festival on Apr 23rd - Downtown Altoona and lake Raystown Ampitheater September 3rd. And of course you can Catch us at the Altoona Curve Baseball game August 16th.

If you are a singer; please think about joining us for our show next spring. We'll get started as soon as music is picked and officials have been assigned.

Hemlock Harmony Brigade 2018

Nineteen years ago a small group of barbershop singers from central Pennsylvania and western Maryland started gathering together for the purpose of socializing and demonstrating their craft. Barry Halbritter in conjunction with the Altoona Horseshoe Chorus has been hosting the event at Halbritters Hemlock Lodge in recent years. The event has grown each year to include over 140 participants this year. The group is a mixture of both men's and women's choruses, men's and women's quartets. Music styles performed during the course of the evening included barbershop, modern day a cappella, patriotic and novelty numbers. Dean McKnight shared his comedic talents as MC. The evening was capped off with a delicious meal. As is usual; participants broke off into smaller groups to showcase their talent with both old and new friends. Needless to say; a great time was had by all. Singers attending the event traveled from State College, Altoona, and Somerset Chapters of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Altoona's Sweet Adeline Altoona Chorus represented the ladies Chapters. Flight 93 and Cumberland Valley Chord Factory, comprised of members of various Chapters also performed. If you love to sing; look up one of the Barbershop Harmony chapters in your area. Information may be found at www.barbershop.org. Altoona Horseshoe Chorus has many links listed at www.youcansingtoo.net.
